Adidas Advanced Concepts Camp
JUL 7-20 2019
In 2019 Summer, PENSOLE announced the launch of ADIDAS Advanced Concept Camps in Brooklyn and Portland. Camp instructors include the ADIDAS Design Team and D’Wayne Edwards, founder of PENSOLE. Campers will have the opportunity to meet with ADIDAS Design recruiters and will work in the Adidas Headquarter. Campers will develop the future performance footwear product, collaborated with MakerLab manager and product manager and presented mock-up and design concept to the Adidas design team.

Our Topic with Adidas is FUTURE FAST, and I was in the basketball design team to design a “FutureFast” footwear for the 3-year-later market. And I was assigned into the FUTURE Basketball Team

A:
What is the FUTURE FAST of Basketball?
3v3 Basketball!
WHY?

3v3 is always the most dominating form of amateur basketball, especially the street ball on outdoor courts.
the pace of professional 3v3 basketball is way more intense and faster than the 5v5
Now, 3v3 basketball has became an official Olympic sports, high-level 3v3 game is receiving wider exposure, which will lead this fast game getting even faster and faster on both professional and amateur courts.

The Games are Different!

The Players are facing Different Challenges !

2. Increased Needs
ANKLE & HEEL
FOLLOW THROUGH
3v3 players cut way more frequently than 5v5 players, which require the shoes to be more supportive and agile at the same time. For the normal basketball sneakers, the heel counter requires to be hard to lock down the heel, but then the heel area can not dynamically follow the movement of feet. So a new structure to solve this problem is another mission of this design.

Our research find when basketball players moves in curvy routes, the toe area gets more pressure, which actually needs more support than the middle area of the lateral side, where the normal basketball shoes would like to reinforce.
I tried to design a new lacing structure to lock down the toe area for 3v3 games.

1. The Moves are Different
CIRCULAR
MOVEMENT
The main Difference between the 5v5 basketball and 3v3 basketball is the movements of the players.
Because 3v3 games play within half court, players move less in the forward or backward direction, but more in circler routes. It changed the main interaction between feet, shoe and the court. I tried to design a specific structure around the sole to give the players more energy return when they move in these circler routes.

Parameterization Design

In the area where bears more pressure, the track pattern is thicker, to make the outsole more durable, the other parts are thinner to lose weight. And the medial side the patterns are rounder to allow the players to have easier ‘Spin Move’.
